PM Narendra Modi Will Chair the 13th BRICS Summit
The 13th BRICS summit is to be held under the chairmanship of India. Due to the pandemic, it will be a virtual meeting.
On September 9, 2021, PM Narendra Modi will chair the 13th BRICS (Britain, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit virtually due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the leaders of Brazil and South Africa will be present at the meeting. It is noticed that, after 2012 and 2016, India will host the BRICS summit for the third time and PM Narendra Modi for the second time. Earlier, he had chaired the Goa summit in 2016.
The theme and the main focus of the BRICS Summit:
‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation, and consensus’ is the theme of the BRICS summit this year. Moreover, the External Affairs Ministry on Monday in a statement said that the main focus of BRICS leaders is to give priority to four areas, which include technology, countering terrorism, increasing people-to-people exchanges, and reforms in various bodies including the UN, the IMF, and the WTO. The leaders will also discuss the changes due to the Covid-19 impact, and the current global and regional issues at the summit. Afghanistan will also be present at the meeting, as Russia and China were key players in negotiations with the Taliban.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year in November, the BRICS summit was held virtually. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Russia and the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, and PM Narendra Modi were noticed for the first time on the same platform after the episode of Galwan Valley.
