Pakistan: Imran Khan to face no-confidence motion on March 25

The opposition alliance in Pakistan tabled a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the ruling alliance of Imran Khan’s PTI as the primary member.

The Pakistan parliament will take up a motion against PM Imran khan on Friday. According to the Pakistan constitution, the no-confidence motion should be voted within 14 days of receiving. It got pushed several days because of an important meeting of OIC (organization of Islamic countries) in Lahore on March 23.

The ruling coalition with PM Imran Khan’s party PTI (Pakistan Thereek-e-insaf) has 155 seats in assembly with the support of MQM-P with 7 seats and PML-Q 5 seats and other members Imran Khan has the support of 178 members which is 6 more than the needed majority of 172 members.

The opposition coalition with PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz as the main member with 84 seats PPP (Pakistan People’s Party) with 56 seats enjoys the support of 162 members.

The reason behind filing a no-confidence motion is the defection of PTI’s members from the ruling coalition. The news of trust deficit between the Pakistan army and Imran khan who previously enjoyed the support of the army. In Pakistan, it’s nearly impossible to rule without the support of the army however both Imran khan and the army disaffirm the news.

With a sinking economy and high inflation, this is the toughest test Imran Khan facing after assuming premiership. Imran Khan appealed to defectors to re-join the coalition said “they will be forgiven like a father forgives his children”.
