A horrible train accident took place in Bengal in which twelve coaches of an express train bound to Guwahati from Bikaner got derailed near the town of Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, on Thursday. The death count in the train accident is reported to be nine, while the injured sent to the hospital is being reported to be 37.

Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, visited the accident spot and stated that an in-depth inspection of the tracks was being carried out. As per the initial probe, it appears that a sudden equipment failure led to the horrible accident that took place around 5PM. Further enquiry is under development to find the root cause of the incident. Hundreds of residents of nearby villages helped the passengers get out safely from the train wreck. As the incident was reported to the authorities, multiple troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) joined the rescue operation to help the passengers come out of danger and assisted the injured to be safely transported immediately to medical care centres.

Prime minister Narendra Modi took cognizance of the accident and shared condolences to the families which incurred loss in the accident.

Vice President M. Venkaiash Naidu, too, tweeted, sharing his prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured in the mishap.

A compensation has been announced by the Ministry of Railways, according to which, the families who lost their loved ones in the accident will receive Rs.5 lakh, and those severely injured will receive Rs.1 lakh. Passengers who suffered minor injuries will receive a compensation of Rs.25,000.
