Google pays tribute to Michiyo Tsujimura

On the 133rd birth anniversary of Michiyo Tsujimura Google pays tribute to her with a doodle. The homepage of Google shows her examining and also brings out some chemical components of green tea. Michiyo Tsujimura was a Japanese scientist, educator, and biochemist and born in 1888 in Okegawa, Japan. Her research was mainly targeted at the components of green tea.

 In 1932, she was Japans’ first woman doctor of agriculture. Apart from this, she also made history in other fields as at Tokyo women s’ Higher Normal School she became the first dean of the Faculty of Home Economics in 1950. In the initial stages of her career, she teaches science. At Hokkaido Imperial University, she pursues her dream of becoming a scientific researcher. Also, examines the nutritional properties of Japanese silkworms.

Michiyo Tsujimura moved to Tokyo Imperial University after few years where she researched the biochemistry of green tea. Also, she researched with Dr. Umetaro Suzuki, well known for his finding of vitamin B1. Their research revealed that green tea contains some amount of vitamin c. In 1929 she isolated catechin which is a bitter ingredient of tea and the next year she isolated tannin, a bitterer compound. And today, at her birthplace we can find a stone memorial in honor of her achievements.
