MANCHESTER UNITED: STANDSTILL (PART 2)
A three part look into Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s transfer targets and their subsequent viability this transfer window
After a dismal transfer window last season, which saw no noteworthy additions to the starting 11 bar Edinson Cavani, a player who became starter only through Anthony Martial’s injury in the first place, United’s recruitment department have to wake up and smell the coffee. Another year of additions like Van De Beek, Amad and Facundo Pellestri would see United plunge into a deep hole of “catch up” with other PL clubs and that cannot be allowed to happen. Every player that puts pen to paper in the next two months needs to be a bonafide starter and nothing less. Lets take a deeper look.
TARGET 2 – DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (Declan Rice, Mauro Arambarri)
RICE: A Premier League proven defensive midfielder who has captained West Ham at the young age of 22, Rice checks a lot of boxes for Solksjaer. Mobile, versatile and and tenacious, Rice takes accountability by trying to drive the ball forward from deep midfield, a quality that would be very well received in Ole’s system. Defensively extremely adept aswell, he *could* be the key to allowing both Pogba and Bruno to operate together in a midfield. The apprehension is there because he is not at the highest level positionally and his passing could use some work aswell. Still, a great addition at the right price although that would be hard to come by with the Hammers asking for 80 million for the midfielder. Huge price. Could be lowered in a swap deal for Jesse Lingard though.
VIABILITY – 7/10
ARAMBARRI: This player is a peculiar one. The Uruguayan plays for Spanish club Getafe as a holding midfielder, seems fair enough until now. But he is neither young, nor much of an upgrade. At 25 years old, he is touted to be a minimal upgrade on pre-existing United DM Fred, a player that is often called “part of the problem” when looking at the United starting 11. Needless to say, a lot of fans would be relieved to know that the interest in the Uruguayan has cooled down since first contact.
VIABILITY – 4/10
