What is UPSC exam and what are it's stages?

The UPSC exam refers to the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. It is considered one of the most prestigious and competitive examinations in the country. The examination's objective is to identify individuals suitable for diverse civil service positions within the government, which encompass the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

The UPSC exam consists of three main stages:

  • Preliminary Examination (Prelims): This is the first stage of the exam and consists of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT). The Prelims serve as a screening test, and candidates who qualify are eligible to appear for the next stage.
  • Main Examination (Mains): The Mains is the second stage and comprises a written examination. It consists of nine papers, including essay writing, general studies papers, and optional subjects chosen by the candidates. The Mains examination assesses candidates' in-depth knowledge and analytical abilities.
  • Personality Test (Interview): The final stage is the Personality Test, commonly known as the interview. Candidates who clear the Mains examination are shortlisted for an interview conducted by the UPSC board. The interview assesses the candidate's personality traits, communication skills, and overall suitability for the civil services.

Candidates' performance in all three stages, i.e., Prelims, Mains, and Interview, is taken into account for determining their final ranking and selection for the various civil services positions.
