MATCH REVIEW : MANCHESTER UNITED 1:1 FULHAM 18/5/2021
United woes continue as relegated Fulham hold them to a draw at home
Manchester United invited fans back into Old Trafford after more than 450 days as the UK Govt lifted Covid restrictions yet many of the fans leaving the ground 20 minutes before the final whistle should tell you all that you need to know about the state of the game. Flat, uninspiring and an overall concerning display by United as they go three consecutive games without a win.
As usual, the start was dominant with United holding 75% possession in the first fifteen minutes with slick possession play and tidy passing. It paid off as a Bruno flick into space was latched on by Cavani who chipped it over the keeper from more than 30 yards out for an absolutely astonishing goal. The roof blew off of Old Trafford as fans celebrated, Cavani knee slid and Ole's men seemed to be in for a comfortable win.
The upcoming hour can be easily characterized - United dominating possession, mustering half chances but never doing enough to find the back of the net again. Best example would be a Greenwood one-on-one that went begging around the 50th minute mark. United lived to regret that miss as J. Bryan headed home a cross on the backpost in the 76th minute to level the game at 1-1. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer brought on Amad and Van De Beek but to no avail as the game remained as stale as before for the final 15 minutes aswell and ended a draw.
The situation is worrying. In exactly eight days Manchester United would be facing Sevilla in their biggest game of the season, the Europa League final yet their form is at rock bottom. A porous defence, an unimaginative attack and a misfiring midfield add up to an anxiety inducing lineup to be taking in such a huge game. Add to that Scott McTominay limping off in yesterday's game and you've got a mountain of issues. An absolutely monuments week awaits for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men.
